Calabria crafts high end boats built specifically for water skiing and wake boarding. Their boats are used in waterski competitions. They also sold a limited number of boats commercially. A small US company seeking brand recognition in a larger market. They needed to project a high end image comparable to Mercedes or Audi in the auto industry.

Sierra Nevada Adventure Company

Founded in 1990 by Shawn and Jill Seale, Sierra Nevada Adventure Company (SNAC) is a Sierra Nevada institution. SNAC purveys outdoor clothing and recreational gear from their stores in Sonora, Murphys and Arnold, California, located northwest of Yosemite National Park. SNAC’s logo and brand were carefully considered before the doors opened in 1990. They are known as a trusted provider of quality gear. Their well respected staff’s personal knowledge of the region has made them a popular spot both for locals and as a last stop for backpackers, campers, paddlers headed for the back country. The SNAC logo was designed to produce well both in full color and single color applications. They have used it to put their mark on everything from hats and clothing to frisbee golf discs, and after nearly 30 years of use it remains timeless and functional. Hibernation Hearth & Home is a home decor retail store in Tuolumne County, California. They specialize in wood and gas heating stoves and fireplace inserts. Hibernation’s local competition includes Lowes, WalMart and Orchard Supply. They are proof that a local small business can continue to survive and thrive even as large retail chains move into and replace small businesses in rural communities. Their attention to details like branding and interior design combined with a high level of customer service, product knowledge, and support help to position their business to compete successfully with big box retailers.

In the process of designing their logo and branding we explored a variety of options. The soundest solutions are arrived at after considering multiple approaches and ideas. 3 Forests Interpretive

Three Forests Interpretive Association [3FIA] is a non-profit educational organization that seeks to inform and educate visitors to California’s Stanislaus, Sierra, and Sequoia National Forests. 3FIA publishes and distributes books, brochures, maps and other materials related to the human and natural history of the Sierra Nevada. Profits from these activities are used to help the Forest Service fund a wide range of interpretive and educational programs, contributing to the public’s appropriate use and enjoyment of these precious resources. 3FIA believes that an informed public can aid in the conserving these shared public lands.

3FIA has retail store locations at twelve ranger stations and forest supervisor offices. Their website was designed to be an online source of trusted information for visitors to the Stanislaus, Sierra, and Sequoia National Forests. Individual forest pages include online and downloadable maps and official Forest Visitor Guides. Their blog highlights their own and others interpretive efforts in the region. During the COVID-19 pandemic 3FIA stores were closed to the public. They used the time to enhance their online presence by adding an online map store as well as blog articles with resources and links for students who were studying at home. www.3forests.com

Sierra Mac River Trips

Sierra Mac River Trips guides guests on whitewater rafting trips down Cherry Creek and the Tuolumne River near Yosemite National Park. Owner Marty McDonnell was a pioneer in the development of self-bailing rafts and rafting on Cherry Creek, one of the most challenging whitewater rafting trips in the US. Their reputation in the industry is impeccable, and their story compelling, but their website wasn’t communicating their core strengths effectively. Our goals when redesigning their website (www.sierramac.com) were to create a mobile responsive site that would convey their unique history and status, and work to draw clients from visitors to Yosemite National Park. We implemented a calculated keyword strategy and focused on the user experience to create a site that was easy to find and use. View more websites by David Design here.

Tuolumne Market

Tuolumne is a small town located near where I live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. My friends Mary and Melitta organized a seasonal weekly Farmers’ Market in the town square on Thursday evenings July thru September. They asked me to create a poster design that could be also be reduced in size and used as a postcard. The postcard goes out to every address in the Tuolumne zip code via Every Door Direct Mail.
