Like many of us, I occasionally escaped boredom and anxiety and found solace in the demon alcohol during the COVID 19 months. Liquid libation, booze, sauce, hooch, white lightning, fire water, hard stuff, moonshine, juice, or the hair of a particular dog. You can debate the virtues of this vice, but it has served mankind since ancient times, and liquor bottles have provided a canvas for commercial artists for centuries. These are some designs that were the inspired at least in part by the liquid spirits.

Thousands of people from around the world are drawn to the Yosemite region. While there is a wide variety of information on the internet for accessing public lands, much of it is impractical to navigate on a mobile device and cell service can be spotty or nonexistent. This small free printed booklet (and downloadable .pdf) was designed for visitors to Tuolumne and Calaveras counties. It highlights 12 nearby day hikes in the region. Maps, images, and details on level of difficulty combine to steer visitors to the right hiking experience. View more print projects by David Design.

Johnny Thunder

Born in 1956, the same year as Elvis released Heartbreak Hotel and US tests first aerial hydrogen bomb in the Bikini Islands. JFK, Nixon, Elvis and the Beats. The late ’50s and the ’60s was a great and strange time to grow up. There was genuine optimism. It also offers a rich treasure trove of iconic imagery that has become our shared visual cultural heritage. These are some of a series of posters I am working on that explores that theme. Live Music Posters

Live music posters (or web images) are probably my favorite projects. The art is here today, gone tomorrow, and wide open for interpretation. As a designer you are pretty much able to create whatever strikes your fancy. I was lucky to do a few of these for my old friend Donny Durkee when he opened his saloon in Columbia in 2012. Tuolumne Market

Tuolumne is a small town located near where I live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. My friends Mary and Melitta organized a seasonal weekly Farmers’ Market in the town square on Thursday evenings July thru September. They asked me to create a poster design that could be also be reduced in size and used as a postcard. The postcard goes out to every address in the Tuolumne zip code via Every Door Direct Mail. All-Outdoors Guide

One of my first jobs was as a rafting guide in California, a wonderful experience which fostered a real love of rivers. One of my first design clients was All-Outdoors Whitewater Rafting. AO published an annual brochure detailing their rafting trips on 10 California Rivers. In 1990 we decided to re-brand their brochure as a “Guide to California Rivers” that could be used for for an extended period of time, thus discontinuing the need for annual printings an allowing for less expensive larger print runs. We expanded to a 24-page magazine format and included a separate price sheet that would include information specific to the current year. The project involved extensive photo editing and the creation of a set of unique maps for each river in the Guide. The printed guide eventually evolved into an online version with links to videos on their website. I feel privileged to collaborate with businesses who are as committed to excellence as All-Outdoors. Golden State Cellular

Golden State Cellular provided service to users in the eastern Sierra foothills before being purchased by Verizon in 2015. Unlike Verizon, Golden State was able to run more regional advertising, speaking to a unique community of Sierra Nevada mountain residents. Golden State was a committed key sponsor of many local community events for schools and other organizations. They were a great client with a sense of humor and willingness to be open to new marketing ideas.
